Papier Mache!

Hello Everyone! You are almost ready to get dirty with papier mache! Hooray! Watch this video to prepare you for what is to come next.

NOW for the blog part!

Pretend your best friend is going to be making a papier mache sculpture. Write helpful hints you discovered from working on this project so far, NOT THE VIDEO. Your hints can be anything from making the armature (skeleton), to fleshing out and adding volume to the armature, to smoothing down the sculpture and filling in "holes." You can also write about things you were doing wrong and how you learned to correct them.

  1. The "helpful" hints I have discovered throughout the 1st part of this project is that you got to add some volume for our imaginative creature:] but other than that, we also added flesh to it, added wires which played the roles of bones, and wrapped with newspaper smoothly:]

  2. To preserve your paste while your mask is being dried, store it in the refrigerator. When you want to use it again, take it out and microwave it for one minute.

  3. Some helpful hints I discovered from the 1st part of this project is how to make the creature flat and make it crucial for putting on paper mache. I found out that when putting on the news paper, we should always make sure that there aren't any dented parts that go in. When this happens, we should fill it in with news paper and then cover it up with some more dry paper. After that, your creature is ready to be covered with paper mache!

  4. Hints:
    1. You can crumple up newspaper and then use a flat newpaper to cover the crumpled up one. If you do this, there is less wrinkles, and you can hardly notice the mistake.
    2. When doing a round head, instead of starting from the neck, start from the face. If you do it from the neck, you might end up with a wrinkle on the face.
    3. When you first start off, use crinkled up paper balls ustill you get the body shape. THen start using flat paper to wrap it.
    4. When doing the leges, rip paper vertically and roll it vertically. Then wrap that onto the wire. After, you can wrap with flat paper.

  5. You should know what your making so you can make a perfect sculpture. :)

Use the tape reasonably, and don't fold it like all weird and stick it on nicely.
the tape is the... solution to neatness!! :D

The helpful hints i discovered from working on this project is when you first have the skeleton it might look confusing of how you are going to change those skinny wires into an animal but first just crumple the paper and keep adding on until it has some flesh and when you want to add some more flesh on with a particular shape first make the shape you want for example a cone or a ball etc then tape it on . Also when you want to fill in the holes make a bundle of newspaper and just paste it in and then cover it up with some more newspaper.

  7. Some helpful hints I might give to my friend are making fleshes tight so that it doesn't look funny when it is covered in papier mache. Also, I would tell them to make all body parts stick together securely, for example like head and body.

    1. You need to think about how much of newspaper you are going to add before start attaching.
    2. It is better to use minimum amount tape.
    3. Better have good teamwork and lots of communication about what and how you are trying to do.
    4. Before rapping the whole body with newspaper to make neat, try to find if there is any part where you need attach more newspaper.

  9. Some useful hints I found in the movie was that you should stick the sticky newspapers on the model as if your tracing it, and not letting the shape or holes lose form. Also, it would be helpful if you added some more wet or dry paper depending on your own model, not forgetting to cover all the dents first.

  10. When you start crumpling the newspaper, you have to start from body to other parts. I found that when you crumple the newspaper, you have make sure there are no holes. After you finished crumpling the newspaper, you have to cover with another layer to make sure there are no wrinkles!:)

  11. MY GOOD FRIEND, since you probably wouldn't want to waste the masking tape, why don't you cover your sculpture with big pieces of newspaper and tape it. You wouldn't waste your time or the tape since you're not taping the big fat crumpled newspaper all over your sculpture. It wouldn't look messy with all the crumples and tapes here and there.

You should most be careful of the shape of the skeleton while you wrap the newspaper around it. As you wrap more and more paper around the skeleton, sometimes you start to lose track of the shape of the skeleton, and the shape might change, and you might not be able to put it back to it's original shape. You should also watch the holes, because if you have so many holes in your project, it will not look good.

  13. When you want to add volume to the armature, you should crumble the newspapers and attach them. First cover the armature with newspapers, and don't just cover it with masking tape. When you have holes or bumps, get a smaller piece of newspaper and crumble them to get rid of the hole. I wasn't cumbling the newspaper, but just attaching the whole newspaperand it didn't work out.

  14. If I had to give advices when she is making it, I would give some advices as shaping the wire, then covering the wire with newspaper, without having any space between each of them. I wouldn't want to use much of tape because you can just put the newspaper over it.

  15. I would advice to whoever doing this project to put many newspaper on the wires. You have to crumple the newspaper over to make the animal's shape. Once it has it's shape, it will be able to stand without any help.

  16. Some helpful hints are that you can make sure that the newspaper that you are pasting are not crumpled. If it is crumpled the shape of the object will be ugly.

  17. The thing I learned when I made the sculpture is that you need to use as much newspaper as possible. Make the newspaper stuff the sculpture so that there are no empty spots or dents because it's annoying to fix it later.

  18. First if you draw the examples of your sculpture. If you drew some of the examples you should choose the best one and name the Sculpture.Cover many layer with your objects until there is you sculpture that you wanted. Next you tape it nice and neat.

  19. The good tips I have learned from working with the newspaper is that you have to add a newspaper to cover all the bumps- it has to be smooth for the papier mache. Also in the beginning your animal wont look like what it is supposed to be, but this is ok because it will eventually turn out right with time.

  20. You should have a good start. It will be very helpful to plan your animal well. Then, You should have a stable wire so the structure is strong and easy to put new papaer on.
