Materials

Look through the sculptures found on this website. Stop when you are looking at the aero mint candy bar. (It's not a sculpture, just yummy candy.) Notice what materials they are made from. Please answer these questions in paragraph form, not question and answer when you've looked through the sculptures.

Do you think the material enhances the sculptures or distracts from the sculptures? Why?
Are some materials better for making the sculptures than others?
Which sculpture from the group do you think is the most successful? Why?

Lastly, describe a sculpture to me that you could make from ANY material you have access to. What material would you use? Why?
With what materials would you put the sculpture together? How?

I think that the different materials enhance the sculpture by adding more interest. You'd never expect that somebody would make an octopus out of food cans. I feel that if you use a material and create something that you can recognize out of it, then there is no true 'better' material. The cheeto room is just awesome in my eyes, it must have taken a ton of time to complete. The details in the human figures and even those glasses are great.

If I were to make something out of any material, how about a chocolate castle? I think it'd be very interesting to see and make that! Just get a giant block of chocolate and slowly carve out a castle from it, like with wood.

  2. I think the material enhances the sculptures. Since the material they used to build the sculpture is so unique and different than the other sculptures, I think it helps the sculpture to stand out more than the others. The materials they used, I think, are very hard materials to play with, like orange peels. But mastering a material that is rather hard to work with, I think it was worth it. Because the delicate and unique materials allows it to draw more attention and more "wows" than "boos". Also, the results of these unique material sculptures are magnificent. However, there is one sculpture that I liked the most. It was the one made out of the orange peel. The orange peel is in the shape of a human and its foot is inside some kind of hair cream. I liked this sculpture the most because it stood out, with its creative ideas and very unique materials. Also the orange of the orange peel helped the sculpture to stand out more.

  3. I think the material used to create the sculpture enhances it because it helps me realize what the object actually is. For example, if the orange peel shaped like a person was not holding the tangerine, it would be confusing what the sculpture is and what it is made out of. I think the sculpture made of watermelon (with a person carved out from it) is made up of better materials than the sculpture that is made out of bread and knife. This is because carving the bread must have been much harder. The most successful sculpture in the group is watermelon carved out like a face. This is because it looks the hardest, but is successfully done to create a cool sculpture. If I could create any sculpture, it would be made out of bread dough. If I create a sculpture with bread dough and bake it to make it into bread, it is a much easier way than baking the bread and then changing the shape or carving it. I would first make different parts of the object and then put them together instead of working with one big piece.

All the sculptures in the website was made of food, such as the Cheetos and fruits. I think that these materials do enhance the sculpture because the sculpture becomes more unique and interesting to look at. However, i don't think that the ones made of fruit can last a long time, so i think that the Cheetos was the best choice of material for making a sculpture. If i could choose a material, i would choose to use small parts of electronics, putting them together with a glue gun.

  5. Seeing through the pictures, I could find myself thinking that I would never ever be able to think of the ideas reflected in these sculptures. These sculptures are very unique and make you think "what is the sculptor trying to express?" or "what made the sculptor come up with these ideas?" These sculptures are all pretty similar but each of them also seemed very individualistic. I've always been thinking that good sculptures are the ones that make the viewers think, and I think these are all great sculptures because they all made me think a lot.

  6. Yes, I think the material enhance the sculpture, because it is free standing, has unique figure, and have strong angles. No, I think as long as you can make sculptures out of a certain materials, they are good materials. The canned food sculpture make me amazed because it is so big, looks so real, detailed, and so creative. I would make a sculpture with lots of soccer balls and make a robot with it!!

  7. I think material in sculpture makes the sculpture more interesting. Material that is used for art can be anything. More you experiment with material to create art work, the art works gets more creative and become YOUR own art work. I think there is no better and worse material for art work. From all the sculpture I saw on top, I think one with orange peel person holding a orange was cool. It was more tremendous because actually peel was able to hold the orange was surprising. I would want to use a yarns or different kind of strings to create my sculpture. I personally like the feeling of yarns because they are soft and they are so flexible that I can move them around easily. But, because it is too flexible, it would stand. To put them together, I would use trasnparent super fast glue to stick them.

However if I was the sculptor and I was building a sculpture, I would have used something more unique. For example, grains of rice.Since rice is very sticky when it's steamed(before you eat it), I wouldn't need any glue to stick them together. I would have made a bowl out of the grains of rice and instead of eating OUT of the bowl, I would just EAT the bowl. :)))))

  9. I think the materials enhances the sculptures because if these sculptures were made out of just normal wires or papers, I don't think I would pay this much attention to them. Just because the materials are fruit peels or cans that we cannot usually think of turning into pieces of artwork, these sculptures catch the viewers' eyes.
I think cans are better for making the sculptures because other materials used like watermelons causes more money and time because if you make a little tiny mistake, you need to buy another one. Also cheetos breaks very easily. They are also very hard to be freestanding. Compared to them, I think cans are better materials because they are not breakable and they can easily freestand.
I think the most successful sculpture is the one made out of a watermelon. I don't know if it is right to judge by how hard the sculpture is to make, but compared to other sculptures, the watermelon seems to have caused more time and effort. So if I were to grade, I would give the watermelon sculpture the most points.
I would use rice and kimchi to make a sculpture. I would make a man made of cooked rice and make the KimchiWhen rice is cooked, it is sort of sticky so I think it would be easy to build up and stick on something. Mostly, I think it would be a great opportunity to introduce Korea and its symbols or traditions.
